Cell-based screening gaining prominence in flow cytometry market

Flow cytometry is an automated analytical technology used to analyze the physical and chemical characteristics of particles usually cells in a fluid when it is made to passed through at least one laser. Specialized software is used to analyze the data gathered in order to discover cellular properties such as size, phenotype and internal complexity. Flow cytometry offer advantages over other traditional analytical methods such as ELISA which includes its ability to deliver results with great precision and accuracy with less time and at comparable cost. For instance, flow cytometry can give end-users the figures of absolute percentages of what each marker or dye is reporting.

Some of the applications of flow cytometry are for conducting academic and clinical research which includes apoptosis, sorting & screening, transfection & cell viability, and cell cycle analysis. Some of the prominent diagnostic applications are for organs transplantation, to detect hematological malignancies, cancer & solid tumors and HIV infection, among many others.

Based on technology, the world flow market is segmented into bead based and cell based technologies, in which cell based flow cytometry would generate the highest revenue generating through the forecast period. The use of high-throughput flow cytometry for performing multiplexed cell-based screens has gained prominence in the recent years owing to its ability to conduct powerful data analysis. Various enhancements are extending capabilities of cell-based screening technologies in flow cytometry such as the recently launched product HyperCyt is a front-end attachment to an existing flow cytometer. With this technology, we can process samples from microplates using flow cytometers at rates of up to 40 wells per minute.

The market for flow cytometry has widespread application among end users such as commercial organizations, medical schools, hospitals, and clinical labs. There are many studies in the market which tracks the recent market trends, changing competitive landscape in terms of technical innovations along with future growth opportunities. Recently, Big Market Research has added a report titled “World Flow Cytometry Market Opportunities and Forecast, 2014 - 2022), according to which the global flow cytometry market would reach $7.0 billion by 2022, growing at 16.0% CAGR during 2015-2020.
